Why I Support the “Beautify Lunada Bay Pilot”

THE SHORT LIST:

WHY I SUPPORT THE ‘BEAUTIFY LUNADA BAY PILOT’

  1. The BLB pilot exemplifies improved strategies for a more cost effective/nature sensitive management of Lunada Bay parkland areas.
  2. Attractive flowering native plants specific to our microclimate enhance the overall pleasure of residents’ outdoor experiences. Birds and butterflies will return to the area. Rural beauty is consistently identified as a community value.
  3. Deep-rooted sub-shrubs hold soil, retain moisture and mitigate erosion. Mowing is eliminated and water usage transitions to a rainfall model as plants mature.
  4. Views from adjacent properties will be preserved, as tall seasonal weeds are eliminated and replaced with appropriate low growing year round native plants.
  5. At this particular location decomposed granite pathways were selected in order to be most inclusive of various user groups, and natural PV stone edging installed for durability.
  6. The nature loop component of the BLB pilot creates opportunities for students in all grades to participate in hands on scientific study. Education is a priority in our community.
  7. Checks and balances for evaluating the pilot involve documenting and tracking plants and wildlife as well as observing user groups and asking for feedback from residents.
  8. I see the ‘Beautify Lunada Bay’ pilot project as an investment in our future. It is well thought out, vetted by LBHOA, PVPLC and PVE, it has built in checks and balances, and is funded by community donations. The project will improve our parkland experience and open the way for a more sensitive and cost effective stewardship policy within the city.
